The Haven, Khao Lak, Thailand

This is a super hotel, and we’ve stayed in here twice between 2022 and 2024. Its location is about 90 minutes north of Phuket Airport, and getting here is really easy with an airport taxi which you can book in advance. The pick up at all Thai airports has always been without any problems, although it does sometimes feel a little sketchy when you book them online.

The Haven Khao Lak with the Largest Saltwater Swimming Pool in Thailand, is an exceptional resort located on Khuk Khak, Khao Lak Beach , one of the most incredibly beautiful beaches in Thailand.

Although the swimming pool is vast, we only used it once because we like to be out and about. The pool has a couple of swim-up bars, but the prices you’ll pay at the hotel are far higher than at other places outside of the hotel. (Just down the road there are several small and friendly bars. Walk onto the beach, turn right, and have a short walk.)

The breakfast is good and will set you up for the day well. The restaurants are okay, but nothing special. We only used them a couple of times; once because we had a voucher which was included in our stay, and a second on the last day as we were waiting around to go to the hotel.

Is there nothing more quintessential than eating Peking Duck in Beijing, or more precisely (but outdated) eating Peking Duck in Peking? (If you’re wondering, Peking was the capital of China until the capital was renamed in 1954, with mainstream Western media fully adopting the new name in the 1990’s.) This dish is synonymous with the...

We were looking around for an activity other than temples for a day and Nick came up with visiting a Lotus silk farm. It turned out to be a very interesting tour and it was great to hear the operation is providing meaningful employment for vulnerable local women and caring for the environment and sustainability...

Dinner on our first night in Geelong, and this isn’t a bad Thai. In fact, it’s one of the better ones. What makes it better? Fresh herbs and spices; fresh curry leaves and peppercorns are easy to miss. I was asked how spicy I would like it, ‘Thai spicy’, yes absolutely, and it was certainly...

One of the big draw cards in Shanghai is The Bund when it’s lit up at night time. It ends up, like many other tourist attractions we’ve seen in China, an absolutely sardine can packed with everyone coming to see the sights. The Bund runs along the Huangpu River, along a spot which on the...

In my quest to see a Panda, we ventured an hour by the metro from Shanghai to the Pudong New Area. A short Didi ride took us from the station to the Animal Park. It wasn’t too busy at all so very easy to get up close to see the animals with an uninterrupted view....

Today we headed north of Beijing to the Olympic Park, and to see the bird’s nest for real. Before we got that far though we spotted the Olympic Tower, it’s hugely tall. This is another attraction in Beijing/China where you need tickets to get in, and a passport. Passport not a problem, we carry them...
