Day 24 – Elephant Mountain (aka Nangang District Hiking Trail)

Nick kindly passed a virus on to me so the Taiwan leg has been a bit of a slower pace. It took a few days for me to feel up to tackling this hike but on our last full day it was now or never. Elephant Mountain, at 184m, provides some of the best views of Taipei 101 – a 508m skyscraper, notable for its 101 floors, iconic design, and impressive speed elevators. Once the world’s tallest building (but no longer as that honour goes to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai), it is the world’s tallest green building, having achieved LEED Platinum certification.

The climb up Elephant Mountain starts from a quiet backroad beside Lingyun Temple. These steps felt brutal in almost 30c and given there was at least 2 defibrillators on the trail it validated the fact it seemed a tough upward hike to the top at 184m (approx. 600 steps). Although there were some young fit locals jogging up…no one likes a show off…..

There are several viewpoints on the way up to take a breather, each furnishing spectacular views over the city towards the mountains…a picture perfect day. It was worth the sore muscles the following day!

In my quest to see a Panda, we ventured an hour by the metro from Shanghai to the Pudong New Area. A short Didi ride took us from the station to the Animal Park. It wasn’t too busy at all so very easy to get up close to see the animals with an uninterrupted view....

So, our last day in Hong Kong, and the end of the trip in our first country. We’ve had a great few days here, but took it a little easier on the last day as we’ve worn ourselves out pretty much with all the walking. BTW, we’ve been keeping a track of our steps through...

This was our chosen location for our final day in Hua Hin and our last trip out on the bike. Only 30 mins from our hotel so an easy ride after breakfast. I’d only seen the temple advertised on a taxi advertising board so we had no idea how large the site would actually be....

Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, and the Palace Museum; this was a big walking day and time on our feet. We joined a tour to cover off these places as it can be easier than trying to do it yourself, especially getting through all the security to get into the Square and into the Palace Museum....

Welcome to our travels which we see as our life no longer attached to a time clock; Life Unclocked. Our adventures have taken us across continents, through bustling cities and tranquil countryside alike. With each destination, we’ve come to appreciate not just the places we see, but the experiences that linger — the aroma when...
