Day 19 – Shanghai Tower, 118th Floor

So tonight we went across the river, the the opposite side to The Bund, to go up the tallest tower in Shanghai. The lift is apparently very fast, although you wouldn’t know that other than the lift info sign, and your ears that feel like you’ve just taken off in an aeroplane. We bought our tickets online via trip.com and this allowed us to skip the queues waiting to buy tickets.

The pictures below should our incredible speed of ascent, and us reaching the 118th floor. (The speed coming down was a little slow, go figure how gravity works.)

The 118th floor was busy, as usual at almost every tourist spot. Getting to the windows to get a picture or two wasn’t that easy. Disappointingly, there were no Shanghai Tower staff to keep people moving, so people having a conversation on their phone, or just sitting at the window having a chat with their friend, while not actually looking out, was frustrating.

However, we did see another set of stairs which took us up to the 119th floor which was less packed and we were able to get some better shots. The shots at nighttime behind glass are always difficult, and we couldn’t get our phones directly onto the glass and point the right was to get the pictures we wanted. (Photo tip, put your phone directly on the glass and you won’t get shadows.)

Aytthaya once served as the thriving capital of the Kingdom of Siam, from 1350 until it was razed to the ground by the Burmese in 1767. The park has majestic ruins of temples, palaces, and statues and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/576/) We had an early start today to jump on the...

After the busy and chaotic few nights in Hanoi, we decided to chill out in Tam Coc. Tam Coc is a small town in the Ninh Binh Province close to the actual city of Ninh Binh but far quieter. We stopped at a lovely little hotel located down a side street off the main through...

One of the big draw cards in Shanghai is The Bund when it’s lit up at night time. It ends up, like many other tourist attractions we’ve seen in China, an absolutely sardine can packed with everyone coming to see the sights. The Bund runs along the Huangpu River, along a spot which on the...

So, we finally made it to Macau. That makes it sound like it was epic to make it to another country in our trip, but it was actually super easy. Getting there was a breeze using the TurboJet ferry, and Wendy has written about this here, Ferry HK to Macau. As per normal we chose...

This is a super hotel, and we’ve stayed in here twice between 2022 and 2024. Its location is about 90 minutes north of Phuket Airport, and getting here is really easy with an airport taxi which you can book in advance. The pick up at all Thai airports has always been without any problems, although...

Landed in Hanoi after a pleasant 2hr flight with Vietnam Airlines from Bangkok, they even managed a meal service in that time. On landing we made our way to the agreed meeting point to find our free (thank you Booking.com genius reward 😀) ride to Hanoi Old Quarter. Some crazy traffic meant this relatively short...
