Day 15 – The Muslin Quarter, Xi’an

A fairly quiet day today, we had a flight at 19:00 to Shanghai so we took it fairly easy. We decided to go to the Muslim Quarter, somewhere we had heard about, but didn’t really know much about. This was a great area, a labyrinth of streets filled with small food stalls, souvenir places and everything in-between. What we like about these places that in the centre of them there are vendors preying targeting appealing to the tourists. Vendors more than happy to offer their wares, tourists more than happy to pay.

However, as you move away from the busier areas you end up in the more locals market areas. It can be more tricky here as you are thrown those ‘looks’ of foreigners in their turf, but most are welcoming with a smile. It’s great to see the local produce, and the butchers with their meat on the street front; without cooling or anything to protect from the hustle and bustle of the streets and the flies in some cases. Having said that, the meat did look good though.

We picked up some lunch here, and it was delicious. Another one of those where you use an unspeakable language, but we got the message across and lunch ended up costing no more than a couple of dollars each. Good fresh food from the street.

Off now to get a flight to Shanghai!

What a welcome to Beijing!!! NOT!!! The announcement on the aircraft, to my ears, was along the lines of if you don’t record fingerprints when you arrive at Daxing International Airport (Beijing) you are likely to be deported; that didn’t feel like the welcome I was expecting!! Anyway, we are pretty much compliant with authorities...

Welcome to our travels which we see as our life no longer attached to a time clock; Life Unclocked. Our adventures have taken us across continents, through bustling cities and tranquil countryside alike. With each destination, we’ve come to appreciate not just the places we see, but the experiences that linger — the aroma when...

Early start today in order to make the high speed train departing at 9:50am. Believe it or not the alarm had to be set for 6am as we knew the short car ride to the station would be in peak morning Beijing traffic and we had to be at the station an hour before departure....

Our foray into Taipei started with a couple of museums as they’re a great way to learn about the locality, they can be very interesting, and they are a good way to stay out of the heat. First off, we headed to the Taiwan National Museum, with a very low entry fee which we were...

The Palace Museum was fun to get to as it was quite a way away from where we were staying. We started off by taking the subway from Taipei Main Station once we’d found the right line. (Taipei Main Station was so difficult to navigate I’ve written its own post!!) From there we exited the...

Another of the ‘great things’ to see in China, the Terracotta Warriors close to Xi’an. These are one more of those man-made creations you can’t really grasp the size of, or understand the time taken to create these warriors, until you’re there to see it with your own eyes. The detail in each warrior is...
