Day 8 – Temple of Heaven

Conveniently located down the road from our hotel, this UNESCO world heritage site (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/881/) should have been easy to organise a visit to. However, the complexities of arranging anything independently made obtaining tickets a BIG deal…..how hard can it be I hear you ask… well I’ll tell you…

Normally a visit to the internet would point you in the right direction and could well lead to a link to allow you to book tickets. Not so here…good luck with the dodgy wifi and site blocking in the first place. If you manage to find an official site and get an English translation it’ll result in advice something like this – “book tickets through WeChat”.

Great! I have WeChat so should be simple….think again…you get all the way through the steps seeing the finish line in sight when….”contact number error”….arghhhhhhhh. No I do not have a Chinese mobile number!

Luckily for a visit to the Temple of Heaven, Nick saved the day (and my sanity) by managing to book through http://trip.com

All-in-all well worth the hassle to get there, very happy to have got there.

The receptionist was super informative and provided a map of Hoi An Old Quarter and additional info like a good optician for new glasses/tailors/activities and what prices were fair for tours etc....

Any travel guide worth its salt will tell you the must-have snack to try in Macau is the Portuguese Tart. According to Google, Hong Kong’s egg tarts (daan tat) feature a stronger “eggy” flavor, a more substantial shortbread and a floral shape. In contrast, Macau’s beloved custard tarts (pou tat) are a combination of flaky...

We were looking around for an activity other than temples for a day and Nick came up with visiting a Lotus silk farm. It turned out to be a very interesting tour and it was great to hear the operation is providing meaningful employment for vulnerable local women and caring for the environment and sustainability...

Today we set off to visit Macau, which can be reached in a variety of different ways but because we didn’t want to spend $640AUD on a helicopter to get there we decided to take the ferry which is the next best option. You can also take the bus to Macau along the fairly new...

We decided to spend a few days in Rayong, which is on the south east coast of Thailand. It’s about an hours drive from Jomtien where we had been staying previously, and was easy to get back to. There is not much in Rayong, other than a large (it appears) Japanese expat community. Whereas in...
