Day 80 – Nongnooch Tropical Garden

Jumped on the scooter for a trip down the main road to Nongnooch Tropical Garden. Nick had been before as part of an overseas work trip outing but I had no idea what to expect…the place is vast and a bit quirky. In fact it purports to be one of the top ten in the world’s living tropical plant collections with a huge focus on conservation of rare species.

It’s a smorgasbord of plants. flowers and trees with over 12,000 species, but that’s not all; there are shows and be warned the Thai dancing performance should come with a warning that your hearing will be at risk…the decibel level was way too high and I spent a third of the show with my fingers in my ears…seriously it was that bad!

There is a sightseeing shuttle bus to get you around and it’s a great way to get your bearings and appreciate the size of the place. Even the plant nurseries are worth seeing due to the sheer amount of plants and everything is just so orderly in lines and colours and types. My perfectionist streak loved it!

The more quirky parts involved the UK style telephone boxes lined up in what was called the “Italian” garden and the dinosaur valley with a reported 814 dinosaurs and who knows how many species of cacti, again the scale was impressive. They are currently building an Egyptian themed area complete with pyramid so it’ll be interesting to see what they add there.

It was very easy to spend a few hours here and wander through the different garden areas appreciating the beauty of the plants and the effort the creators of this garden continually go to to maintain and improve the area.

What a welcome to Beijing!!! NOT!!! The announcement on the aircraft, to my ears, was along the lines of if you don’t record fingerprints when you arrive at Daxing International Airport (Beijing) you are likely to be deported; that didn’t feel like the welcome I was expecting!! Anyway, we are pretty much compliant with authorities...

After the news we received yesterday we thought today would be a good day to visit a buddha, and the largest buddha in Hong Kong. It is quite a journey to get there, via train and cable car and then nearly 300 steps up to the buddha itself. We were quite amazed at how busy...

We decided to spend a few days in Rayong, which is on the south east coast of Thailand. It’s about an hours drive from Jomtien where we had been staying previously, and was easy to get back to. There is not much in Rayong, other than a large (it appears) Japanese expat community. Whereas in...

We were looking around for an activity other than temples for a day and Nick came up with visiting a Lotus silk farm. It turned out to be a very interesting tour and it was great to hear the operation is providing meaningful employment for vulnerable local women and caring for the environment and sustainability...

Today we set off to visit Macau, which can be reached in a variety of different ways but because we didn’t want to spend $640AUD on a helicopter to get there we decided to take the ferry which is the next best option. You can also take the bus to Macau along the fairly new...

Landed in Hanoi after a pleasant 2hr flight with Vietnam Airlines from Bangkok, they even managed a meal service in that time. On landing we made our way to the agreed meeting point to find our free (thank you Booking.com genius reward 😀) ride to Hanoi Old Quarter. Some crazy traffic meant this relatively short...
