Day 17 – Shanghai Wild Animal Park

In my quest to see a Panda, we ventured an hour by the metro from Shanghai to the Pudong New Area. A short Didi ride took us from the station to the Animal Park.

It wasn’t too busy at all so very easy to get up close to see the animals with an uninterrupted view. It’s actually very similar in layout to Dubbo Western Plains Zoo with open-style enclosures. Over 10 000 animals and 200 species so plenty to look at. The ticket we had covered a bus ride through some open enclosures, not quite like an African safari…more the no.271 from Belrose to the city…but we did get close to some wildlife!

A highlight was the orangutan who had a sense of humour and as he strolled across the high ropes high above a pedestrian walkway and decided to relieve his bladder. I suspect he knows what he’s doing.

And I got to see a Panda 🙂

There are 3 ways to get to Macau from Hong Kong We went for the TurboJet ferry which provided a very comfortable smooth ride. In fact I could have left the Kwells travel tablets behind but past life experiences have taught me that I don’t have the best sea legs on the smoothest of oceans!...

This is a super hotel, and we’ve stayed in here twice between 2022 and 2024. Its location is about 90 minutes north of Phuket Airport, and getting here is really easy with an airport taxi which you can book in advance. The pick up at all Thai airports has always been without any problems, although...

Aytthaya once served as the thriving capital of the Kingdom of Siam, from 1350 until it was razed to the ground by the Burmese in 1767. The park has majestic ruins of temples, palaces, and statues and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/576/) We had an early start today to jump on the...

Any travel guide worth its salt will tell you the must-have snack to try in Macau is the Portuguese Tart. According to Google, Hong Kong’s egg tarts (daan tat) feature a stronger “eggy” flavor, a more substantial shortbread and a floral shape. In contrast, Macau’s beloved custard tarts (pou tat) are a combination of flaky...

Wow, Angkor Wat is just the biggest and main temple in the Angkor temple park 20-minutes north of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Around this area there are around 50 temples, and they are all very significant in their own way, in their shear size, and the planning that went into building them. Not only that, many...

What a welcome to Beijing!!! NOT!!! The announcement on the aircraft, to my ears, was along the lines of if you don’t record fingerprints when you arrive at Daxing International Airport (Beijing) you are likely to be deported; that didn’t feel like the welcome I was expecting!! Anyway, we are pretty much compliant with authorities...
