Day 8 – Universal Studios Beijing

Today we went to Universal Studios Beijing as we like a theme park, and this one has been built and run like a US theme park; clean, well looked after and generally excellent all round. There isn’t anything we could fault here, other than setting the seed that if we were to pop over to Osaka we would have been to all Universal Studios around the globe.

Stand-by on our decision to go to Universal Studios Osaka.

We decided we would take a Didi to the park, Didi is the same as Uber and easily accessed from the Alipay app. The 45-minute drive to the park cost us around $12 AUD. For us, this was another long day on our feet and putting the steps in. There is lots to see and the park is large, and very busy. Queues for the rides weren’t too bad, I think the longest wait was probably around one-hour.

Food at the park is expensive and very US themed, but when you’re in a US based theme park there is nothing better to have for lunch than a Minion Burger.

We didn’t stay until closing time as we were getting tired and decided not to take the subway back either as the trip is quite long and we didn’t want to have to spend another 1:15 standing on the train if we couldn’t get a seat. So, we found the taxi rank and jumped in, and of course we have the hotel details in Chinese which meant conveying our destination to the driver really easy. As we approached our hotel we wanted to be dropped off further down the street and Google Translate helped to convert that message to our driver, and was nice and easy. The drive back, which took around one-hour, cost $16 AUD; great value.

Conveniently located down the road from our hotel, this UNESCO world heritage site (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/881/) should have been easy to organise a visit to. However, the complexities of arranging anything independently made obtaining tickets a BIG deal…..how hard can it be I hear you ask… well I’ll tell you… Normally a visit to the internet would...

It seems to get worse … The taxi drives us from the airport, it’s quite a long drive as the airport is situated someway from the city of Beijing. All is going well and I’m tracking the progress of our taxi using Apple Maps which actually works quite well in Beijing. travelling from south to...

What a welcome to Beijing!!! NOT!!! The announcement on the aircraft, to my ears, was along the lines of if you don’t record fingerprints when you arrive at Daxing International Airport (Beijing) you are likely to be deported; that didn’t feel like the welcome I was expecting!! Anyway, we are pretty much compliant with authorities...

So, our last day in Hong Kong, and the end of the trip in our first country. We’ve had a great few days here, but took it a little easier on the last day as we’ve worn ourselves out pretty much with all the walking. BTW, we’ve been keeping a track of our steps through...
