Day 33 – Huay Mongkol Temple

This was our chosen location for our final day in Hua Hin and our last trip out on the bike. Only 30 mins from our hotel so an easy ride after breakfast. I’d only seen the temple advertised on a taxi advertising board so we had no idea how large the site would actually be. Turns out it was much bigger than anticipated with plenty of points of interest to walk around including a deer park and some very large fish…sadly no photos of the fish…I was too astonished watching locals through entire bread rolls into the water to feed them!

Wat Huay Mongkol is famous for its giant statue of Luang Phor Thuad, a park-like environment with a lake, and a Buddhist temple. Luang Phor Thuad (16th century) was a southern Thai monk and is said to have performed miracles, such as turning seawater into fresh water. There is a great back story I read which you can also enjoy here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Pu_Thuat

A walk past some banana trees took us further into the park where there is a huge golden Buddha and the best bit was we were completely alone as it seems most locals and tourists just go to see the giant monk. It was super peaceful sat in the presence of the statue so we enjoyed the tranquility for a while before heading back to the bike.

The Palace Museum was fun to get to as it was quite a way away from where we were staying. We started off by taking the subway from Taipei Main Station once we’d found the right line. (Taipei Main Station was so difficult to navigate I’ve written its own post!!) From there we exited the...

This is not really a shopping mall, but a large area taking in a few roads which are closed during the time this market/mall is open. It’s very much arranged for the tourists, and you don’t see locals at this market. What drew, Wendy, to this area was the Chocolate Factory which was clearly called...

Siem Reap is a great place, and we really enjoyed it! To be honest we weren’t really sure what we were going to find in Siem Reap, other than the Angkor Wat temple park. However, this place is bustling and there was plenty of night life for us to walk around. Like most other places...

Taipei Main Station is massive, a cavernous labyrinth of interconnecting tunnels and areas. There are very large markets in this subterranean area, at least four stations and I wouldn’t like to guess the area of this station underground. It has quite a few levels so you seemed to be either going up or down a...

In another step towards our travels around SEA I graduated this week from Deakin University in Geelong with a Master of Leadership degree. It took me 18 months to complete the course, which I completed online. It was a tough course to complete, with a few different elements; online units requiring typically three assessments to...
