Day 33 – Huay Mongkol Temple

This was our chosen location for our final day in Hua Hin and our last trip out on the bike. Only 30 mins from our hotel so an easy ride after breakfast. I’d only seen the temple advertised on a taxi advertising board so we had no idea how large the site would actually be. Turns out it was much bigger than anticipated with plenty of points of interest to walk around including a deer park and some very large fish…sadly no photos of the fish…I was too astonished watching locals through entire bread rolls into the water to feed them!

Wat Huay Mongkol is famous for its giant statue of Luang Phor Thuad, a park-like environment with a lake, and a Buddhist temple. Luang Phor Thuad (16th century) was a southern Thai monk and is said to have performed miracles, such as turning seawater into fresh water. There is a great back story I read which you can also enjoy here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Pu_Thuat

A walk past some banana trees took us further into the park where there is a huge golden Buddha and the best bit was we were completely alone as it seems most locals and tourists just go to see the giant monk. It was super peaceful sat in the presence of the statue so we enjoyed the tranquility for a while before heading back to the bike.

It’s unbelievable, and it happened in my lifetime. Now a popular tourist attraction, the atrocities which happened at The Killing Fields can still be felt. I’m not going to explain what happened here, or of the death of more than 20,000 people who arrived but never left. More information can be found on Wikipedia. There...

I was having a bad hair day today, so having passed many massage places mentioning hair shampoo I thought I’d give the experience a whirl. Turned out to be far more than just a shampoo and blow dry!  It’s a “buffet” of relaxation, including shampoo, deep scalp massage and a facial over the course of...

We booked a MuBus Tour for this day trip to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. This section of the wall is about an hour drive outside Beijing and the tour company were well organised and explained our options clearly. Lunch was available on arrival at the site, just a buffet of various Chinese...

We went to Kuala Lumpur; that’s about enough said about that!! Our plans for Malaysia were to spend a few days in KL before heading up to George Town (Penang) for the New Year. However, when we got to KL and our accommodation was awful and KL felt really sketchy. We’ve done a lot of...
